Review summary
Pros
- Immersive ambience with sound effects, narration, and fog of war that enhances immersion.
- Excellent for solo play and family sessions; effectively acts as GM/Zargon so you can play without a live GM.
- Helps players learn the game and run sessions; convenient for exploring official quests and campaigns.
- High-quality visuals and atmosphere that add to the overall presentation.
Cons
- Frequent bugs and stability issues (freezes, unresponsive UI, end-turn glitches).
- Rule fidelity and AI issues (line-of-sight handling, spell targeting, Zargon tactics not very challenging, monsters ignoring furniture).
- Missing features and content gaps (offline mode, quest designer, ability to create/share fan-made quests, more hero slots).
- Lack of online/multiplayer support and incomplete expansion coverage (no server-based play; not all expansions are available).

| 2026-06-23 | Pe***** | Got Heroquest for Xmas and wanted to play together with the wife and this app allows us to play without worrying about having to deal as the game master. Only gripe I have with it is that the sound never works, would love to hear the story telling in a different voice than mine. | |

| 2026-06-18 | Th***** | Amazing app and quality thats all free! I love the charm like the mark hamil like voice acting for slaying goblins and orcs and the setup for quest. To get the best experience from this app i would use zargon and app as a suggestion and not completely adhere to its restrictions for best gameflow. I love using this with a friend and letting zargon be ai so i can teach both sides of the board. Thank you Avalon and hasbro for the love put into this. I know plenty of people who are going to miss and miss out on this revitalized board game | |

| 2026-04-13 | OS***** | I’ve never played this game before or any type of table top game with miniatures. I remember the commercials for this game when it came out “back in the day.” My friend got the game and we played it together with our wives😅 (just the 1st quest so far). It is really fun and this companion app is really cool and helps you along. Love the soundfx and music. I hope they continue supporting this but it looks like 2026 is the end of support. Hopefully we can still use the app in years to come. | |

| 2026-03-15 | Al***** | As a family with littles who has moved out of state this app is the only reason I’ve been able to consistently barrel through content as a solo player in the rare free time I can muster. The app is generally solid and while there have been some bugs here and there it otherwise wouldn’t be possible for me to enjoy all the expansions the game has to offer so quickly without it. I hope the developers are allowed to or can respond on the best method for us avid players to submit bug reports and acknowledge their fixes in future updates, some are years old and we’ll annotated in the global HQ community. Beyond that, thank you for this and supporting and enabling my play one of my most cherished games. | |

| 2025-12-27 | Co***** | Over all this app is great! I grew up playing this game and have since been bringing some friends in. It’s nice not having to be Zargon. But it would be an even better app (I would give 5 start) If it allowed play over a server. So I can play with family and friends that have the game but live in different parts of the country. Biggest bug that bothers me, If there is a trap on the other side of the door and there are no monsters present; when you search for traps it will not tell you they are there until you go thru the door and trigger it. Even if the dwarf goes thru first, you can’t attempt to disarm the trap. This needs to be fixed! | |

| 2025-07-28 | Mi***** | Thank you so much for this! With life so busy, I have little time to relax and when I do not all my friends can join. Thank you for making this, now I can play solo and enjoy the game on my own time as well! | |

| 2025-07-20 | Ma***** | I love the app! The backdrop sound scapes, the sound effects and narration all add to the immersion. My only suggestion would be for the Zargon AI to be a little more tactical. By this I mean that I have noticed that Zargon will always attack the barbarian when he could have an opportunity to inflict wounds on weaker characters. I use this to my advantage obviously, but if I were playing Zargon myself, I would gang up on the spell casters at every chance! Or, make the “who to attack” decision random based on the characters that could be hit in a given turn. That would add another layer of strategy for the players right? Like do I risk putting my wizard in line of sight to cast Genie knowing that I could get pummeled on Zargon’s turn? | |

| 2025-05-09 | Pa***** | I use the HeroQuest Companion app to experience the official quests as a player before I run them as Zargon for my friends. The atmosphere and graphics are top notch, and I like the “Fog of War” element as well. However, the app doesn’t always reflect the rules of the game in how certain things are handled— most notably line of sight for spell casting. According to the rules, a Hero standing in a square at an open door can see any monster or Hero located along a line drawn from the center of the Hero’s square to the center of the target’s square, as long as that line does not cross a wall or other creature. This means that a Hero can see monsters in the squares on either side of the open door— the line of sight passes next to the wall, and isn’t stopped by it (and this is shown in the rule book diagram). But I have found that the Cast Spell action in the app doesn’t treat these two spaces as visible, even though they should be. Fire of Wrath, Ball of Flame, and Genie will declare that no target can be seen in these positions, but allow for targets further away. This error needs to be fixed. Also, the monsters’ tactics controlled by the AI tend to be poor; they do not consider the power of the Wizard and Elf as spell casters, instead concentrating on the Barbarian and the Dwarf as primary targets. As a result, the AI Zargon is relatively easy to defeat. That’s okay for my purposes, but not very challenging for those who might want to co-op against the AI rather than one player taking on the role of Zargon. Don’t know if that’s really something which can be “corrected” in a computer AI. UPDATE: I’ve been playing through some of the newer quests and have run into multiple errors. In “First Light,” when magical aid is summoned, the new “figures” all stack on the same spot, and are hard to separate and move as a result. This also breaks the rule that no two figures or furnishing can occupy the same square. Also in “First Light” the App requires a hero to be adjacent to certain furnishings to search it, which also breaks the rules for searching rooms, which a hero should be able to do from any square in the room. In “Prophecy of Telor,” the Flames of Zargon just causes the monster to freeze in place; it neither moves nor attacks. In “Spirit Queen’s Torment: The Tower of Air,” when the App takes over and moves a hero randomly, all the heroes completely freeze, and cannot be selected or moved, nor can Zargon’s turn be activated. You can access the game controls (save and quit, settings, etc.), but play is halted. Need some fixes, guys! | |

| 2025-04-11 | Th***** | Where can we go to submit suggestions for the app? We need things like harder bosses and more frequent hits when monsters roll attacks. Also app should roll monsters defend die too. No reason it doesn’t. Why do only goblins and skeletons have “hard versions”. All monsters should be allowed to toggle to harder versions. Again where can we officially go to submit these additions to the app? | |
