The RPG Companion App is a powerful, content-rich D&D tool that excels in homebrew support and usability, with regular updates. However, reliability problems, builder gaps, heat/performance issues, intrusive ads, and pricing concerns reduce its overall reliability.

Pros

Very comprehensive content (classes, spells, items) with strong homebrew support.
Combat system is intuitive and the character sheet presentation is easy to use.
Ongoing updates add new content and keep up with 5e/2024 rules.
Free to use with an option to remove ads.

Cons

Frequent stability issues: crashes on launch or after updates.
Device overheating during use.
Character builder quirks and missing options (e.g., certain content, dropdown problems, spell filtering).
Ads can be disruptive, and pricing decisions across versions raise value concerns.

Recent reviews

App has been great until whatever is happening with the ad controlled content. Before I watched ads to get custom content and level up characters without paying the premium. Now that option isn’t working so I have to rebuild my character completely to level up.

150$ or 30 a year for premium on a mobile app is very unreasonable, especially considering that the old app was far cheaper. I would’ve stayed there, but it hasn’t been updated in a long time, and is now unusable. What is offered for premium is extremely minuscule relative to the price. I personally would’ve preferred to spend 10 dollars for the app upfront, and I feel that is far more fair than what is currently offered
