The Smartest Practice Amp

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Spark: Chords & Backing Tracks is a smart practice amplifier and companion app that jams along with you. It auto-displays chords for millions of songs in real time, with tempo control and loop features to help you master difficult sections.

Smart Jam creates a virtual bass and drums section that follows your playing, while Voice Command lets you control streams and backing tracks hands-free. Powered by Positive Grid's BIAS tone engine, it delivers 10,000+ authentic tones for guitars and basses (requires Spark Amp).

User Reviews

Reviews praise Spark’s sound and features for practice, jamming, and AI tone design, with strong hardware/app integration. However, repeated concerns focus on flaky Bluetooth connections, frequent crashes, and a clunky preset workflow with limited cross-device syncing. Users also want missing features like spring reverb, in-app volume control, and easier Hi-Z access. Overall sentiment is mixed: great hardware and functionality when the app is stable, but reliability and usability problems are common.
Pros
  • Excellent amp tones and hardware variety with good value.
  • Great for practice and jamming with songs/backing tracks.
  • AI tone generator and rich preset customization enable creative tones.
  • Strong integration between Spark hardware and the app.
  • Overall user-friendly app experience when stable.
Cons
  • Unreliable Bluetooth connectivity and pairing across iPhone and pedals.
  • Frequent app crashes and instability that disrupt usage.
  • Cumbersome preset management and tone-saving workflow (no rename, no cross-device sync, hard to search).
  • Missing features and limitations (spring reverb, in-app volume control, Hi-Z mode hard to find, limited AI tone options).
  • Occasional device recognition issues and confusing device IDs (e.g., Spark 2 shown as Spark 40).

Edit: It seems like the app and interface get worse every time I use them. It’s a cool concept and it’s great when it works, but half the time when you try to load songs on the play-along feature they either A) don’t have results even though the songs are definitely on YouTube or B) it lags and sounds choppy. It’s also hit or miss whether it will connect to Spotify. And none of that is to touch on the well-known Bluetooth issues.

Previous version made multiple suggestions. New version gives 0-1 choices, 0 being text only telling you how you Might achieve the tone you would like based on your search, 1 being generally sub-standard in accuracy and volume. A very disappointing “improvement “.
