Features & Capabilities

Fluent Forever is a memory-based language learning app built on Gabriel Wyner’s proven method. It starts with pronunciation training, then teaches vocabulary through images, and finally builds natural grammar through immersive stories. Languages supported include Spanish (Latin American & Castilian), French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Dutch, and Hebrew, offering a science-backed path to long-term fluency.

Unlike many gamified apps, Fluent Forever focuses on what actually sticks: accurate pronunciation, efficient vocabulary, and speaking fluency through personalized flashcards and spaced repetition. Learn one language at a time with a monthly subscription that unlocks full features, including mnemonic imagery, audio lessons, and memory-driven review.

User Reviews

Users praise Fluent Forever for its image-based flashcards, pronunciation focus, and vocabulary/ear training aligned with the book. However, widespread complaints include a clunky UI, unreliable performance, poor AI image quality, weak support/refunds, and missing features like native-speaking chat and multi-language support.
Pros
  • Custom flashcards with the ability to add your own images, aiding memory.
  • Strong pronunciation training using IPA to learn sounds.
  • Effective for ear training and vocabulary building; image-based learning helps retention.
  • Methodology aligned with the Fluent Forever book, offering structured starting vocab and grammar reviews.
Cons
  • Clunky UI and confusing learning path; slow, clumsy flows.
  • AI-generated images are low quality or misaligned; limited customization and image-loading issues.
  • Frequent bugs and performance issues (slow loading, black screens, progress not saved).
  • Poor support and refund handling; slow responses and refunds not always honored.
  • Missing features (no native-speaker chat; cannot learn multiple languages at once) and some content inaccuracies in vocabulary/grammar.

Look, maybe this is an issue on my end, I really hope it is my fault. After watching a couple of videos, trying to watch more leads to a pop up recommending that you subscribe. The same thing happens after finishing your first round of new flash cards. Despite advertising in the pop up that standard features include: all pronunciation lessons, unlimited flash cards, language learning videos, and unlimited reviews, none of this holds true. As someone who doesn’t spend money on apps, I was thrilled to see how many features were included in the free version! Unfortunately, this doesn’t hold up when put to the test. I really hope that the answer to these issues is just to buy the subscription.

This method of language learning is working much better than others I’ve tried. The information is sticking and it’s not boring.

This app is pretty bad. I purchased a subscription because I enjoyed the book and thought it would follow along with the same main principles. However, it doesn’t. The interface is clunky. You can’t learn multiple languages at the same time. The path for learning is confusing, which I did complain about but got the runaround. The grammar explanations aren’t easy to understand. There is no ability to chat with a native speaker. I’ve been using this for a year now and, at most, it asks me to review 2 word cards per day max. That’s not very challenging. How am I learning anything? Even though Duolingo has subpar principles for learning a language, it’s a much better app and gives you a variety of learning methods. I will not be renewing my subscription and will, instead, move to paid Duolingo.
