Face Cap - Motion Capture

FBX Facial motion capture

Features & Capabilities

Face Cap makes facial motion capture easy. Record your performance and export to FBX (mesh, blendshapes, and animation data) or TXT (animation data only).

Now you can import custom avatars from Blender or Maya, calibrate the capture data, record video for reference, and apply filters and smoothing. You can also send blendshape data over WiFi using OSC, lock or hide the head during capture, and privacy is respected—Face Cap does not collect personal information. User Reviews

Face Cap is valued for reliable real-time capture and solid integration with Blender/Maya, with strong developer support and production-ready results. However, reviewers repeatedly flag its high price, export/file-management quirks (location of exports and ASCII/retargeting limitations), and limited documentation/UI clarity. Some compare it unfavorably to cheaper or free alternatives. Overall, it’s a solid, workflow-friendly tool if budget allows and you’re willing to navigate some export and documentation drawbacks.
Pros
  • Reliable real-time facial capture with a simple, easy-to-use workflow
  • Good export compatibility with Blender, Maya and lip-sync pipelines (FBX/WAV)
  • Strong developer support and quick, helpful responses
  • Widely used in production and education, reinforcing its practical value in workflows
Cons
  • Very high price for the feature set and perceived low value compared with cheaper or free alternatives
  • Export/file-management issues (unclear where exported files are saved; ASCII export limitations and retargeting challenges)
  • Documentation and UI can be unclear or limited in detail
  • Noted that there are cheaper or better-performing alternatives available in the market

I’ve been using this app for 4 years and it’s been consistently excellent. I run a small animation studio, I teach with this app, and I love supporting small businesses as well. This app is so useful because it records FBXs & WAVs from voice actors without any fuss, making it easy for a technical animator to work with the data. Niels consistently responds to questions promptly and even supported my students in the MIT MITES program last year. Long live Face Cap!!
