Features & Capabilities

Rhythm Trainer is a series of field-tested exercises to master essential rhythmic skills for any instrument. Practice 15 minutes a day to test your rhythm, lock in the metronome beat, learn to repeat varied rhythms, and improve your sight-reading. It’s more efficient and engaging than traditional metronome drills.

Whether you practice alone or with a teacher, Rhythm Trainer helps you develop a sense of rhythm, sight-read rhythm notation, and hear mistakes by ear. Rhythm is the heart of music—learn the skill once, play rhythmically forever. The extension offers a 4.99 USD per month auto-renewing subscription; subscriptions renew automatically unless turned off, and you can manage them in your account settings.

User Reviews

Users praise MRT for being easy to use and effective at teaching rhythm and sight-reading, especially for beginners and across instruments. Repeated drawbacks include pricing/paywall, limited progression, and rhythm-preview limitations, with occasional device performance issues.
Pros
  • Very easy to use and beginner-friendly.
  • Helps improve rhythm and sight-reading across instruments (piano, guitar).
  • Engaging rhythm practice that feels like real learning, not gimmicky.
  • Effective for building rhythm skills and internal timing.
Cons
  • High price / paywall / overpriced.
  • Insufficient rhythm preview or read-ahead; not enough time to see upcoming rhythm.
  • Lack of level progression: no level selector and progression feels limited.
  • Missing advanced rhythm options (no compound meters, limited note types like half/whole notes).
  • Performance issues on older devices / Bluetooth compatibility.

Overall, this is a decent app and I appreciate that it lets you use it for 10 minutes a day without a subscription. That said, the subscription model feels completely unnecessary—this is essentially a static app that doesn’t rely on AI, servers, or heavy syncing. I’d gladly pay a one-time fee of $10 or so instead. My biggest gripe, aside from the subscription issue, is the lack of microphone support. It would be much more useful if you could practice with your actual instrument instead of just tapping on the screen. Get rid of the rental nonsense and add microphone and it would be five star app.
