User Reviews

Users praise Fretonomy for its comprehensive fretboard training and solid theory content, plus portability and value for serious learners. However, recurring issues include paywall gating, a cluttered UI, and a range of reliability bugs that affect gameplay, saving, and cross-device use. Privacy concerns and customer-support experiences also surface. Overall, it’s a strong, motivating learning tool when it runs smoothly, but onboarding, licensing clarity, and reliability should be improved.
Pros
  • Broad, structured fretboard practice tools (notes, intervals, chords, scales, and sheet music) with engaging games.
  • High-quality theory content and videos that effectively build music theory understanding.
  • Portable, on-the-go learning with good value for the subscription, making regular practice feasible.
  • Proven effectiveness in improving fretboard knowledge and visualization for many players.
  • Useful for guitarists and bassists alike, supporting learning beyond basic chords.
Cons
  • Content and features largely gatekept behind a subscription, leading to paywall frustration.
  • Convoluted UI and navigation, with multiple paths to the same screen and difficulty starting games.

I haven’t verified the other game options it has but if you’re like me and want to be able to identify intervals on guitar, know that this app does not recognize 4ths as being on the same fret a string over but rather one lower. If it didn’t have issues like this it would be a great tool.

I started learning the mandolin and hit a plateau in music theory. Videos and unguided research helped with technique and really basic theory, but I felt so scattered not knowing what to focus my practice on. I also prefer playing Blues, so I tune down a whole step which made learning scales more difficult. Not only does the app give organization to my study, but I really appreciate it having a feature for custom tuning.
