User Reviews

Review consensus: Fretuoso is a strong, portable tool for learning fretboard notes and reading music, especially with staff notation and octave mappings, plus a motivating leaderboard and on-the-go practice. Users report rapid progress and useful visualization of notes on the neck. However, recurring downsides include intrusive ads, audio issues on some devices, lack of left-handed support, occasional inaccurate note mappings for certain instruments, and a somewhat dated, limited feature set without advanced customization. Reliability and usability concerns are commonly cited alongside the educational potential.
Pros
  • Powerful tool for learning fretboard notes quickly, with staff notation and octave mapping to aid reading sheet music.
  • Very portable and usable on the go—practice away from a guitar, on transit or in bed.
  • Personalization features and motivation, such as a leaderboard and adjustable practice modes.
  • Supports multiple instruments/tunings (e.g., guitar, banjo, mandolin) for varied learners.
  • Helps connect fretboard notes to musical notation, boosting overall music literacy.
Cons
  • Ads are overwhelming and can make the app feel unusable.
  • Audio/sound sometimes doesn\'t work on certain devices, preventing pitch hearing.
  • Left-handed players have no alignment option or proper neck orientation support.
  • Occasional inaccurate note mappings for certain instruments or notes (e.g., ukulele variants) leading to false information.
  • Feature set feels dated with limited customization and advanced options.
Recent reviews
learned the guitar fretboard practically overnight with this app 🎸also was settled using tab until I turned on the staff-notes option. Unbelievably helpful to now read sheet music showing octaves Not gonna drop it down to 4 stars for this but would have an option to fix the neck in place so the nut is always visible. Some of us don’t so much use fret numbers but view the neck graphically using inlays/markers

I’ve been using this to help me memorize the fretboard on the banjo. It’s also good for sight reading single notes. There are a lot of ways to personalize it. My only criticism is that the tunings for banjo are a little weird… but I assume there aren’t too many banjo players using the app so gets a pass. Would recommend
