Features & Capabilities

Capital Bikeshare is DC, Virginia, and Maryland’s bike-share system—the first large-scale bikeshare in the nation. CaBi operates thousands of bikes at hundreds of stations across Washington, DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Tysons, Reston, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Bethesda, and Chevy Chase. It’s available 24/7 and supports one-way trips by docking at any station.

The CaBi App lets you purchase rides, unlock a bike, view station locations, see available bikes and docks, and get walking directions to stations. It also shows upcoming transit departures and supports Single Ride, Access Pass, and Membership purchases. Happy riding!

User Reviews

Most reviews are negative. Users rely on Capital Bikeshare for DC mobility but complain about rising prices, unreliable bikes and docks, and billing glitches. They also report poor customer service and a flaky app. The recurring themes are cost increases, maintenance/availability problems, and billing disputes, with an overall sense of deteriorating value despite utility for getting around the city.
Pros
  • Enables easy commuting and mobility around DC.
  • Helpful for moving between destinations that are far from a stop.
  • The map helps locate docks and parking to plan trips.
Cons
  • Significant price increases and higher overall costs (price markup seen across trips and passes).
  • Frequent bike and docking issues (bikes often faulty, some stops have no available bikes or full docks).
  • Billing problems and mischarges (double charges, day-pass charges, extra fees).
  • Poor customer service and slow/insufficient support response.
  • App reliability and usability issues (unresponsive app, loading station data/bikes inconsistent, frequent glitches).
Recent reviews
On Father’s Day, we were able to get bikes for two out of three family members. We bought three day passes so we spent over an hour going between two stations trying to get the app to work for one of our family members. We tried deleting and re-downloading the app, turning our phones on and off, calling customer support, and all the things we were instructed to do. In the end, no one could help and we still got charged for our three day passes.

these bikes are normally super helpful but the one i was just riding detected that i was riding on the sidewalk (i wasn’t, in fact i was in the middle lane of the street) and locked up and stopped pedaling in the middle of a busy street during rush hour. i was lucky enough that i could quickly get onto a sidewalk but im seriously upset and can’t find a place on the app to report it so here i am. i get it as a safety feature but i was far from the sidewalk and it put me in much more serious danger than riding on the sidewalk. won’t be using this again im sticking to lime bikes from now on
