Features & Capabilities

Bay Wheels is the Bay Area’s premier bikeshare system, offering thousands of bikes (electric and classic) across San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, and San Jose. Bikes unlock from one station and return to another, enabling flexible, one-way trips. It's a greener, healthier way to travel, whether you’re commuting, running errands, or exploring a new city, and it’s available 24/7.

The Bay Wheels App lets you unlock and pay in-app, view walking directions, and see real-time public transit departures—from BART and Caltrain to MUNI, VTA, ferries, and more. It supports purchases like Single Ride, Access Pass, and Membership to fit different plans.

User Reviews

Bay Wheels can be a convenient SF mobility option with value from Bike Angels and Lyft integration, but reliability and cost are major concerns. Recurrent docking issues, weak customer support, misleading pricing, and poor bike maintenance undermine the experience. Availability and consistency of bikes at stations also vary, affecting usefulness despite solid core features.
Pros
  • Useful mobility option in San Francisco that can be faster than Uber and convenient for getting around when docks have bikes.
  • Bike Angels rewards program yields points that can extend membership or be redeemed for Lyft ride credits.
  • Integrates with the Lyft app, making it easy to use alongside existing rideshare accounts.
  • Promotional pricing can offer substantial value, such as multi-month access for a low price.
  • Core functionality (bike scanning and maps) generally works well when the system is functioning.
Cons
  • Docking and station reliability: docks are often empty, full, broken, or nonfunctional, making it hard to dock or end rides.
  • Poor customer support and refunds: slow responses, unhelpful service, and frequent denial of refunds despite issues.
  • Pricing and day-pass disclosures: Day Pass terms can be misleading, and per-minute fees can lead to unexpectedly high costs.
  • Bike maintenance and quality: uncomfortable seats, heavy bikes, and poorly maintained or malfunctioning e-bikes.
  • Inconsistent bike availability: sometimes no bikes nearby or at morning peak times, leading to longer waits or trips canceled.
Recent reviews
I love ride share bikes. They are the future of transportation however I have a few complaints. The price, it’s so expensive for what it is. Second is the quality. Some bikes are completely decrepit and broken, ridiculous for a paid service. That being said I’m a strong supporter but there needs to be some changes.
