User Reviews

The NYRB app delivers superb writing and breadth across literature, arts, and ideas, and many users find it makes reading easy, organized, and worth the cost. However, the app suffers from persistent usability and access issues: font size and text controls are poor, PDF handling is broken or limited, search is weak, and login/subscription/payments can fail. Additional maintenance concerns—lack of updates and a dated feel—compound the problem. Addressing these would align the apps UX with the publications high editorial standards.
Pros
  • High-quality, thought-provoking writing across a broad range of topics.
  • App makes reading easy: well-organized, readable, and saves your place.
  • Content is very valuable and worth the cost.
  • Breadth of coverage across books, arts, philosophy, and current events.
  • Writers with deep expertise provide insightful context.
Cons
  • Font size and text settings are unusable or limited, hurting readability.
  • PDF features are poor or inconsistent: bookmarks dont work, PDFs are locked, and there are limited PDF capabilities.
  • Search function is weak and unreliable.
  • Login/access and subscription issues, including being logged out mid-article and payment problems.
  • Maintenance concerns: lack of updates, crashy behavior, and an outdated feel.

I think the app is generally very good since I read it on my iPad. I find it rather funny the number of negative reviews views that are that a literary magazine doesn’t have the resources to constantly update their app, but they have updated it slowly and it’s better than ever

I’ve read the New York Review since its first issue during the 1962 newspaper strike. I loved it at first sight and I still do. It’s a bright spot in the glut of what passes for journalism.

I must have this magazine for useful rational information, viewpoints, and entertainment. Please keep AI away from the content. App works!
