User Reviews

Gaia GPS provides broad, versatile outdoor mapping and easy data export, widely valued for planning and navigating. However, frequent price increases and paywalls, recurring bugs and performance issues, privacy concerns over public sharing of tracks, login and purchase friction, and UI changes after acquisition are the most mentioned drawbacks.
Pros
  • Comprehensive, versatile outdoor mapping with broad trail data for hiking, off-roading, boating, and more.
  • High accuracy and is often regarded as more accurate than some competitors.
  • Easy to use and trusted for planning and navigation by long-time users.
  • Strong data export capability in common formats (e.g., GPX).
Cons
  • Price increases and paywalls after acquisition; subscription model criticized and free features reduced.
  • Frequent bugs, crashes, and performance issues; updates causing instability and high resource use.
  • Privacy and data-sharing concerns; saved tracks can be publicly visible by default and social features feel invasive.
  • Login/purchase friction; password issues across devices and repeated sign-in prompts.
  • UI/UX changes and feature removal; cluttered interface and features moved behind paywalls.

This used to be a great app, but little by little features have been changing for the worse. I have been using the Pro version for years, the main reason was access to Nat Geo maps, but now several map layers have been replaced with in-house made maps that lack the level of detail the Nat Geo maps had. Simple features that are common on other mapping apps are lacking (example: directional arrows on planned routes). I haven’t found a good replacement yet, but I will not hesitate to switch once I find it.

This app is borderline unuseable (16 pro max). Constant multi second lag for any action. Freeze/crash etc. No 3d maps. What a joke. I had Gaia on Android devices years ago and it worked perfectly. Will be spending the year I’ve paid for looking for a better option until I cancel my subscription.
