User Reviews

OS Maps offers detailed, offline-capable maps and is a strong planning tool for hikers, particularly in the UK. However, recurring issues with subscriptions and billing, login problems, and reliability of offline maps significantly hinder user experience. Offline map downloads can be slow and unstable for large areas, and outages can lock users out of downloaded maps. When functioning properly, it provides good value for premium features, but subscription infrastructure and offline reliability require improvement.
Pros
  • Detailed, high-quality OS maps with offline access and accurate GPS location.
  • Great for planning walks/hikes and trips, especially in the UK; user-friendly planning tool.
  • Offline maps capability—maps can be downloaded and used in areas with no cellular data.
  • Perceived value for money; reasonable monthly price for premium features.
Cons
  • Subscription and login problems (Apple ID login support missing, app vs web subscription management, 'you already have a subscription' errors).
  • Billing and renewal issues, including cancellation difficulties and charges after cancellation; website/app mismatch.
  • Reliability/offline stability problems (frequent logouts when servers have issues; offline maps inaccessible at times).
  • Offline map download issues (very long download times for large areas; large maps can crash or cause download overlap).

I travel to the UK every few years and love the OS maps app. It’s great for planning walks to historic sites in the countryside and the subscription price is very reasonable for a month at a time. I’m heading to the UK soon and I can’t upgrade to premium. My devices say I already have a subscription on my Apple ID, but I don’t. It asks me to log in with my apple account but there is no “log in with apple” option, only e-mail. So I deleted my account and created a new one with my Apple ID e-mail address and it still does the same thing. Apple doesn’t even show the expired subscription from the last time I went to the UK. I assume because I paid OS directly instead of through the Apple Store. Now when I try to manage my subscription from the web, the website just pushes me back to the app and I get the same “You already have a subscription with this device’s apple ID” error. Please add Apple ID login so this weird billing thing doesn’t come up any more, or bring back web-based subscription creation. Great great app, terrible subscription infrastructure :-( EDIT: I was able to renew by searching my e-mail for the subscription receipt from years ago, which had a “manage subscription” link there. That took me to the App Store and let me Resubscribe, even though the App Store wasn’t listing the expired subscription. Sounds like Apple made some changes to the App Store list of subscriptions that has broken your user experience for US subscribers.

Beware! I’ve tried to cancel multiple times and it won’t take. I’m going through Apple now. Don’t sign up for the free trial.
