User Reviews

Users praise offline maps, strong trail data for planning, responsive support, and reliable trail tracking. However, recurring complaints center on billing practices and difficulty canceling subscriptions, with some basic trail data locked behind the paywall. Several reviews cite UX friction and disruptive updates, plus post-update bugs like missing waypoint labels. A subset feels the app is skewed toward 4x4 use with insufficient non-4x4 trail coverage. Overall, the app is valuable for planning and safety when the subscription is managed smoothly, but customers want clearer pricing, broader trail access, and more stable updates.
Pros
  • Offline maps for navigation without cellular service
  • Robust trail data for planning, including trail difficulty and conditions
  • Responsive, knowledgeable customer support that resolves issues quickly
  • Trail tracking and route history help you stay on course and not get lost
  • Versatile across activities (overlanding, dirt bikes, hunting) with useful map layers and boundaries
Cons
  • Billing and subscription issues, including unexpected charges and a difficult cancellation process
  • Basic trails and descriptions can be locked behind a paid subscription; some popular trails are missing
  • Convoluted UX and frequent update prompts; frustration with app design
  • Bugs introduced after updates, such as waypoint names disappearing from the map
  • Perceived 4x4-centric focus with limited support for non-4x4 activities like hiking/MTB

I was hoping to use this app to track some wildfires that are actively in progress in my area as onX was the first app to pop up when I was trying to find this information. But onX has decided to lock this very useful safety feature behind a paywall. Nice to know that this company values money more than people’s safety.

I downloaded a HUGE area in low quality for offline map use. I mapped to my destination and it took me an hour deeper into the national forest than I wanted to go, then it wouldn’t let me reroute anywhere at all. I would select a spot, click “navigate” and nothing would happen. Then I closed the app and kept trying and although the button worked, it kept giving error messages (I don’t remember what they said, now) — it wouldn’t gps me anywhere at all even though I was well within the offline map I downloaded
