ChordAid: Chord Reference Apple

ChordAid: Chord Reference

Guitar, Uke, Banjo, Mandolin

Features & Capabilities

ChordAid: Chord Reference is a chord reference and finder for guitar, bass, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and bouzouki. It supports standard and alternate tunings and includes more than 45 chord types, from simple triads to jazz extensions and slash chords. You can display, compare and practice several chords at once—these can be chords from a song or different variants of the same chord. Adjust the displayed complexity to match your skill, including difficult shapes with two barres and large finger stretches. Choose from strumming or finger-picking styles, and enjoy left-handed layouts.

ChordAid also translates chords between instruments, lets you mark favorites, and switch to a favorites-only view to build a personal chord library. In Reverse Chord Finder mode, you select a few notes on the fretboard and the app shows matching chord names; you can add the chord to your list and explore other fingerings. Supported instruments and tunings include Guitar (6 strings with many tunings), Bass (4 or 5 strings), Ukulele, Mandolin, Bouzouki, Guitalele, Banjo (5 and 4 strings), and Waldzither. User Reviews

Users praise ChordAid for its broad cross-instrument support, rich chord voicings, and the ability to store and print cheat sheets, all aided by a clean interface. However, several reviews repeatedly flag a steep learning curve, insufficient onboarding, an incomplete chord library, and usability flaws such as awkward navigation and limited printing/export options. Overall, the app is powerful and versatile, with room for content expansion and better UI guidance to satisfy beginners and multi-instrument players alike.
Pros
  • Cross-instrument versatility with tunings and chord translation across guitar, mandolin, banjo, and more.
  • Rich chord dictionary with many voicings, plus bookmarking/favoriting and filtering to reduce clutter.
  • Print-ready outputs and cheat-sheet capability for practice sessions.
  • Well-designed, intuitive interface that many users praise.
  • Helps learning and practicing across tracks and instruments, speeding up progress.
Cons
  • Chord library feels incomplete; many chords are missing and some requests not available.
  • Onboarding is poor; hard to figure out how to use without help or tutorials.
  • UI/readability/navigation issues—clumsy format, some diagrams disappear, and left-right scrolling is awkward.
  • Limited print/export options; users report inability to print or export easily in some cases.

Been playing guitar mandolin and banjo for many years and I have no idea how to work this app.

I got this app when I bought a banjo and boy let me tell you, it works so well! It doesn’t have the cords to songs but you can learn the cords and then go to an app like ultimate guitar and play songs. Definitely worth getting!
