Features & Capabilities

Color Blind Pal helps people who are color blind see the colors around them and lets those with normal vision experience what color differences look like. Open the app to get descriptive color names (common, scientific, and colloquial), see the hue, saturation, value, and exact RGB code, and use the camera to identify colors in the real world. The color inspector, color filter, and camera tools—freeze, flashlight, and image import—make color reading fast and reliable.

In addition to identification, Color Blind Pal can simulate different color blindness to build empathy, help read color-coded maps and charts, and even support basic color-vision tests. Features like highlighting a selected color, dragging the spectrum, and hiding UI buttons keep the app accessible while you explore colors. Ideal for students, designers, travelers, and anyone who wants a richer color experience.

User Reviews

Color Blind Pal is praised as a practical, lifesaving tool for colorblind users, helping them identify and categorize colors and use color perception in real life. Users laud its usefulness, intuitive start, and educational value. However, reliability is uneven: accuracy depends on lighting and reflections, some colors and filters are misidentified, and there are usability and bug issues (mode switching, camera problems, and missing macro support) that limit day-to-day use. Overall, it’s valuable with caveats about lighting and occasional interface glitches.
Pros
  • Helps colorblind users identify and differentiate colors quickly, enabling practical tasks like sorting art pastels or beads.
  • Described as life-changing or a lifesaver, giving users greater independence in everyday color decisions (outfits, makeup, teaching others).
  • User-friendly with a straightforward tutorial; easy to learn and use.
  • Useful for demonstrating color perception to others via the built-in simulator, helping non-colorblind people understand.
  • Offers practical color-differentiation tools (e.g., hue shift) that help distinguish colors more clearly.
Cons
  • Accuracy can be inconsistent and highly dependent on lighting or reflections, causing colors to be mislabeled (e.g., white paper appearing orange or yellow).
  • Some colors and filters are misidentified (e.g., pinks, greens, Tritanopia) or not reliably labeled, especially with pastels.
  • Usability issues: modes can be hard to switch between; interface elements can obscure controls, and users often need to re-set hue ranges each time.
  • Bugs or hardware limitations: the camera function can stop working, and newer devices may not use macro/close-up shots; color labeling can still be incorrect in some scenarios.

I’m a color-blind artist. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to ask my wife to check a color for me. I had a couple other color-checkers and they would help me figure out some colors. With this app, it is so simple to land a cross hair on a color and you get an immediate general read on it. Plus a color gamut at the bottom places the color along the range. Today, I put 100+ artists’ pastels away into their color categories in under an hour. Previously I would need someone else to do that or help me. I only wish I had found it when it was first launched a few years back. Great!

VERY happy to find this app after a lifetime of dealing with being colorblind. My only redwood that it can be updated to deal with my mixed red/green color blindness in is display mode.

To my knowledge, I am a red green colorblind. I Downloaded the app to see what it might provide.. At first I was impressed when it immediately identified my brown slacks. However, upon looking at items on my table, I was startled to find out that a piece of white paper was identified orange hue or yellow hue, which could’ve been reflection. What I didn’t notice was that unless something was a Strong, full saturated color it had difficulty distinguishing and giving it a color name. Since I am already confused by some colors I do not find that the app is beneficial and at this point have removed it from my phone. It’s a fascinating app. Give it a try yourself. You may find it would rate higher.
