HeadingsMap Firefox

HeadingsMap

The extension generates a document-map or index of any web document structured with headings and/or with sections in HTML 5. It shows the headings structure, the errors in the structure (ie. incorrect levels), and it works as HTML5 Outliner too.

Features & Capabilities

HeadingsMap is a powerful Chrome extension designed to create an interactive document map or index for any web document structured with headings and HTML5 sections. It highlights the hierarchical structure, detects and reports errors in heading levels, and provides an optional HTML5 outline feature. Users can navigate directly to content by clicking items in the generated map. It supports documents within frames, shows aria-label attributes, updates dynamically upon DOM changes, and offers two themes for customization. This extension is an invaluable tool for web developers, consultants, auditors, and users seeking to improve navigation and document structure understanding.

Features include collapsible heading levels, CSS highlights upon selection, exclusion of hidden headers, anchor link copying, and manual refresh capability. HeadingsMap aids in accessibility and semantic clarity, making web navigation smoother and debugging document structures easier.

User Reviews

HeadingsMap is lauded for clearly showing a page's heading structure via a full outline and easy integration in the document view. It’s quick and handy for checking headings and readability. Recurring drawbacks include non-configurable font size, occasional conflicts with Vimium, and layout/scroll quirks (page width and fixed-position header scrolling). Some users also want a shortcut key. Overall, it's highly useful but has notable bugs that affect usability.
Pros
  • Effectively distills the page structure into an easy-to-read heading outline.
  • Displays the entire tree of headings, making structure quick to read and verify.
  • Does exactly what users need and is quick to use with one-click access.
  • Integrated in the document view rather than the browser sidebar, for convenient access.
  • Helpful for building pages and checking whether headings are correctly set, with a visual red-outline cue when a heading is accessed.
Cons
  • Font size is not configurable and sizing is inconsistent across sites (too big on some pages, too small on others).
  • Conflict with Vimium's search/keyboard shortcuts, causing the page to close or behave oddly.
  • Layout issues: page width not adjusted on load, so text starts at the sidebar.
  • Scrolling/outlining bug when header elements have fixed positions can cause the outline to scroll too far.

I like very much this extension. The only annoyance is the font size is too big. Is there a way to change it (and only for HeadingsMap, I don't want to resize the font at the whole Firefox level)?
