Features & Capabilities

Flagfox is a powerful Chrome extension that displays a country flag representing the physical location of the current website server. This feature enhances browsing awareness by indicating the server’s native language and applicable legal jurisdictions. Users can access a broad array of tools, including site safety and malware checks, whois and DNS lookups, automatic translation, SEO and web development research, diagnostics like ping and traceroute, page code validation, and URL shortening.

Clicking the Flagfox icon opens a detailed geotool that shows the server city, local time, and ISP. The extension supports customizable actions, quick access via icon clicks or keyboard shortcuts, and performs country lookups locally to protect user privacy. Maintaining an up-to-date internal IP location database via monthly updates from Maxmind, Flagfox is an unobtrusive, resource-efficient tool that empowers secure and informed web browsing.

User Reviews

Flagfox is broadly liked for showing site country flags and providing handy tools with a simple, unobtrusive design that runs in the background. The main drawbacks are inconsistent flag coverage (flags sometimes missing or shown as globes) and privacy concerns about clipboard access. A few users also note minor nuisances like the notification and translation workflow, but overall the extension is seen as useful and efficient.
Pros
  • Shows a country flag for the visited site and provides quick access to tools like safety checks, whois, translation, and URL shortening.
  • Easy to use with a minimalist design and runs smoothly in the background.
  • Generally feels reliable and does what it promises.
Cons
  • Flag icons/coverage are inconsistent, with some flags missing or displayed as globes instead of actual flags.
  • Privacy concern: the extension reads the clipboard.
