Country Flags & IP Whois

Displays country flag of website's server location, Whois and Geo info on a browser addressbar icon

Country Flags & IP Whois is a powerful browser extension that displays the national flag of the server's physical location right in the toolbar. It uses MaxMind's offline GeoLite database to determine the geographical position of web servers without any external server requests, ensuring privacy and speed. By clicking the toolbar icon, users can access detailed Whois and geolocation information.

The extension features a comprehensive right-click menu offering advanced web tools, including SSL certificate checking, traceroute, ping, DNS and Whois lookups, HTTP header inspection, IP copying, URL shortening, and access to online reputation and security services like Alexa, WOT, VirusTotal, and more. Custom commands support dynamic placeholders for various formats, enhancing usability. The extension also supports background tab opening and is open-source for transparency and collaboration.

User reviews

Users appreciate 'Country Flags & IP Whois' as a simple and useful tool to see website origins and IP information. However, multiple reviews highlight dissatisfaction with a recent update that moved the flag icon from the address bar to the toolbar, reducing convenience and causing clutter. Additionally, the add-on sometimes displays incorrect IP addresses when using VPNs. Users suggest improvements like restoring the flag to the address bar, enhancing flag visibility, and fixing IP detection accuracy.
Pros
  • Provides quick information about the country origin of websites with flags.
  • Simple and unobtrusive tool that doesn't change browsing experience significantly.
  • Handy for network-related tasks and understanding where websites are hosted.
  • Users appreciate the general concept and find it interesting.
Cons
  • Recent update moved flag icon from address bar to toolbar, causing usability issues and frustration.
  • Flags in the address bar were preferred as they saved screen space and avoided toolbar clutter.
  • Incorrect public IP display when using VPN; it shows VPN host IP instead of the actual host IP.
  • Some users feel the add-on became less user-friendly after the update.
  • Suggestions for improvement include bigger and more saturated flags and better IP lookup via REST API.
Recent reviews
Uninstalled the latest update and went back to 0.6.4 This addon's now an inferior product (the latest version). It is user-unfriendly. Badly made. With little care for usability. In the latest update this addon destroyed its so called notification icon: the display of flag from inside the address bar (url bar). Therefore, "Country Flags & IP whois is now invisible when you browse unless you press extra buttons and pull up the toolbar icon out of the extension drawer or dropdown menu where it belongs. Do you really expect me to go back to the early 2000s and clutter my toolbar with addon buttons on toolbars and tab bars? Or force me to make extra click on addon dropdown menu EVERY single time the web page changes (to see the flag)? That's ridiculous and unacceptable. Flagfox still shows the flag from the URL bar so this is not really a firefox issue. Other addons are still capable of displaying notification icons inside URL/address bar. So why THIS addon stopped doing that is inexplicable, and cannot be blamed on Firefox.
