Features & Capabilities

The First Party Isolation Chrome extension enhances your online privacy by enabling the First Party Isolation feature. Inspired by the Tor Browser's privacy model, it keys all browser identifiers to the domain you visit, effectively isolating and blocking third-party trackers and cookies beyond standard blocking methods.

Users can easily toggle this privacy feature on or off by clicking the Fishbowl icon, disabling or enabling first-party isolation as needed. This add-on offers a comprehensive approach to safeguard against cross-site tracking and fingerprinting, making your browsing more secure and private.

User Reviews

Users appreciate this Firefox add-on for its straightforward ability to toggle First Party Isolation, enhancing browser privacy without manual config edits. However, multiple reviews mention the need to restart the add-on or browser when enabling FPI and compatibility problems with services like Apple iCloud. The lack of a whitelist feature limits flexible use. Additionally, Ubuntu users encounter functional issues, leading some to manually edit configuration files to manage isolation settings.
Pros
  • Provides easy toggling of First Party Isolation (FPI) settings.
  • Works as expected in isolating first-party data and enhancing privacy.
  • Simple to use compared to manual configuration via about:config or prefs.js.
Cons
  • Add-on requires browser or extension restart to enable FPI after disabling it.
  • Some compatibility issues with certain services like Apple iCloud, necessitating temporary deactivation.
  • Does not support a whitelist feature for exceptions, limiting usability in some scenarios.
  • Functionality issues reported on Ubuntu Linux, with the add-on not working properly after switching off.
  • Users resorting to manual preference edits due to add-on limitations.
Recent reviews
Extremely happy with this addon, and have used it successfully for many years in Firefox 😊 Apparently though, in modern Firefox, privacy.firstparty.isolate = false is the default because it is all handled automatically by other processes. However, in Mullvad browser, privacy.firstparty.isolate = true - is the default because they have a stricter configuration. So there is a distinction between these two Firefox-based browsers and how they deal with the privacy.firstparty.isolate issue.
