Overview

Features & Capabilities

Dataplicity allows you to remotely access your Raspberry Pi's terminal shell from any network using your Android device, without the need for dynamic DNS, port forwarding, or VPN. It uses a secure websocket connection initiated by the client on your Pi, ensuring it works smoothly even behind NAT or firewalls. No need to enable SSH or open local ports, as the client is self-contained and secure.

To use Dataplicity, install the agent on your Raspberry Pi (source available on GitHub). The client does not run as root automatically; you must explicitly request superuser access for full control. This extension makes managing your Raspberry Pi remotely straightforward, secure, and hassle-free.

User Reviews

Overall, users find dataplicity easy to use and install, with a friendly UI and solid core functionality for remote Raspberry Pi access. However, onboarding friction is a major drawback: mandatory account creation, sign-in flow that creates new Pi users rather than using existing ones, and troubled billing/support experiences. Setup can be challenging for beginners, with poor documentation. Migration-related outages can render devices unreachable for days, eroding trust. The app shows promise, but onboarding and account-management issues significantly impact the user experience.
Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to install and connect
  • Works well with Raspberry Pi for remote access
  • Stable core features / reliable
  • Pleasant UI
Cons
  • Requires creating an account / sign-up just to use the app
  • Billing issues: broken billing page, cannot cancel, support contact bouncing
  • Difficult to set up for non-experts; manuals not user-friendly
  • Migration/outage issues causing devices to become unreachable
  • Login flow creates a new Pi user instead of using the existing one; trust concerns
