Longhand: Math Puzzle

Longhand is a cryptarithm puzzle: a long multiplication worked out in full, with every digit replaced by a letter. Each letter always stands for the same digit, no two letters share a digit, and no number starts with a leading zero. Your job is to work out which digit each letter is, using nothing but logic and the arithmetic on the page.

A PUZZLE A DAY, THE SAME FOR EVERYONE
Every day brings a new set of boards, generated from the date itself — so today's puzzle is the same puzzle whether you play it at 6am or at midnight, on your phone or on someone else's. There is Everyone's board, your country's board, one cut to your own tier, and a stretch one tier above it.

PURE DEDUCTION
Every board is built to be solvable by reasoning alone. Follow how carries ripple through a column, work out which digits a product can and cannot end in, and let elimination force a letter — the same techniques that crack a long-multiplication cryptarithm on paper, with the setup done for you.

PLAY IT YOUR WAY
- Three levels of help: Guided does the eliminations for you; Standard answers as you go with three lives; Focused tells you nothing until you submit the whole board. Each one changes what a board is worth, not which board it is.
- Four board sizes, from 2x2 up to 3x3 digits, and your tier moves on its own as you improve.
- Write the puzzle in the symbols you like — the ten stand-in letters can be Latin, Greek, or another alphabet. Nothing about the puzzle changes, only what it is written in.
- Just play, as much as you like, on boards that count for nothing.

A LEADERBOARD, IF YOU WANT ONE
Finish a board and your score can join the day's standings, worldwide or for your country. There is no sign-up and no email: your name is generated for you, your country is one you pick yourself, and you can play the whole game without ever looking at the leaderboard. The puzzles themselves need no connection — only the standings do.

Longhand is for anyone who likes number puzzles, logic puzzles, or cryptarithms (also called alphametics or verbal arithmetic). If you enjoy Sudoku, KenKen, or a tricky logic grid, Longhand offers the same satisfaction, with multiplication in place of the grid.
