Jungle Journal Android

Jungle Journal

The field book for everything you spot on safari. Identify, collect, keep.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Every safari ends the same way. A camera roll of four hundred photographs, and by the time you are home you cannot remember which waterhole, which morning, or what that small brown bird was called.

Jungle Journal is the field book that fixes that.

Point your phone at what you spotted and it tells you what it is, right there in
the vehicle, with no signal needed. Then it goes into your field book, where it
stays.

THREE FIELD BOOKS TO FILL

The Safari Ledger for mammals. The Aviary for birds. The Herp Log for reptiles, frogs and everything else that people forget to look for.

Every species you spot is pressed into its page like a specimen, with the date, the place, and your own photograph. Fill a page and it stays filled. Come back in ten years and it is still there.

IDENTIFICATION THAT WORKS WHERE THERE IS NO SIGNAL

Nearly 400 Southern African species, identified on the phone itself. No upload, no waiting, no bars needed. Which matters, because the places worth going are the places without reception.

Not sure? Log it as a mystery sighting and name it later.

MAPS FOR 28 PARKS, OFFLINE

Kruger, Addo, Kgalagadi, Pilanesberg, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and more. Camps, gates, waterholes, picnic sites, lookouts and the roads between them, all stored on the phone before you leave.

There is a drive-time estimator that routes over the real road network, tar and
gravel, so you know whether you will make the gate before it closes.

RECORD THE DRIVE, THEN WATCH IT BACK

Start a drive and the app quietly records the route. Afterwards it plays the
whole morning back as a short film: your jeep tracing the road, dust behind it,
stopping wherever you stopped, with each sighting stamped onto the map as you reach it.

Save it as a picture, or export the film and send it to whoever you went with.

KEEPSAKES WORTH SENDING

Every sighting can become a card worth sharing: your photograph, the species, the place, the date, laid out like a page from a naturalist's notebook.

SEE WHAT OTHERS ARE SPOTTING

Opt in and your sightings appear on the community map, so you can see what has been about lately. Entirely your choice, sighting by sighting. Everything stays
private unless you say otherwise, and sensitive species are never pinned to an exact location.

COLLECT, AND KEEP COLLECTING

The Big Five, the Little Five, the Ugly Five. Endemics you will not find anywhere else on earth. Challenges to work through and a leaderboard if you enjoy that
sort of thing.

A grey go-away bird counts. A lifer counts more. Both go in the book.

WHO IT IS FOR

First-timers who want to know what they are looking at. People who have been
going for thirty years and never wrote any of it down. Photographers who want the record as well as the pictures. Anyone who has stood at a gate at six in the
morning in the cold, waiting for it to open.

Free to use. Works offline. Yours to keep.
