audioff - audio device selector

Select audio output device for each tab.

audioff - Audio Device Selector

audioff is a versatile Chrome extension that allows users to select specific audio output devices for each browser tab individually. It supports HTML5 <audio> and <video> elements, making it perfect for managing sound output when using multiple audio devices simultaneously.

The latest 2.1.0 update improves user privacy by injecting scripts only on pages when needed, instead of running on all sites. This minimizes permission requests and enhances security. The extension requires enabling media.setsinkid in Firefox for compatibility. For users concerned about permissions, audioff can also be used as a bookmarklet alternative. User reviews

Users appreciate audioff for allowing per-tab audio output selection, enabling streaming to different devices simultaneously, and its simple design. However, many report that the add-on fails to retain selected audio devices during YouTube playlist transitions or tab reloads, requiring repeated manual selection. Its functionality depends on website support, and some users are concerned about its extensive permissions, impacting trust. Despite these issues, it remains popular among streamers and users who want flexible audio routing in Firefox.
Pros
  • Allows selection of audio output device per browser tab.
  • Useful for streaming or playing audio on multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Simple and clean implementation with basic functionality.
  • Works well on various websites that support the feature, especially YouTube.
  • Offers flexibility to route audio to devices like TV speakers or soundbars separately from the main audio output.
Cons
  • Does not retain audio output selection when a YouTube playlist switches to the next video; requires re-selection.
  • Settings are lost when tabs reload or move to the next video, causing inconvenience.
  • Does not consistently work on all websites; depends on site support for audio output selection.
  • Requests full access to data on all websites, raising trust and privacy concerns for some users.
  • No built-in option to select output device from a menu instead of a dialog window.

big fan of this addon but now needs an update. no longer retains selected output in tab when moving to the next youtube video. requires a refresh of the tab and then reselection of the desired output to continue working. 5 stars if this gets fixed
