Audio Output Selector Firefox

Audio Output Selector

Allows you to change the audio output device of <audio> and <video> elements. Requires media.setsinkid.enabled set to true in about:config!

Features & Capabilities

Audio Output Selector is a Chrome extension that lets you seamlessly change the audio output device for HTML <audio> and <video> elements. Whether you want Twitch audio on your speakers and YouTube on your headset simultaneously, this extension makes managing multiple devices simple and flexible.

Please note, this add-on relies on the experimental Audio Output Devices API, which requires enabling media.setsinkid.enabled to true in about:config. While currently it updates audio devices only for existing elements when run, future updates aim to better support dynamic content on social media platforms. Open-source and community supported, you can find the project on GitHub.

User Reviews

Users praise Audio Output Selector for letting you pick the audio output (monitor vs speakers), its simple install with no permissions, and cross-platform open-source design. It’s seen as filling a Firefox gap and is widely appreciated. However, reliability problems exist: it’s not always consistent, may reset after video refreshes or output changes, and newer Firefox versions can break it. Linux users may need PulseAudio due to ALSA limits. A restart after config and minor UI quirks are noted. Overall, highly useful but not consistently dependable.
Pros
  • Core feature to select and route the audio output to the desired device (e.g., monitor vs main speakers).
  • Easy to install with no permissions required.
  • Cross-platform and open source (GitHub) with a simple, unobtrusive UI.
  • Lightweight and doesn’t clutter Firefox; straightforward to use.
  • Valued as a practical workaround for a missing built-in Firefox capability.
Cons
  • Unreliable at times; not 100% consistent across sessions.
  • Compatibility issues with newer Firefox versions (sometimes not showing up or breaking).
  • Linux users may need PulseAudio; ALSA-only setups can yield NotFoundError.
  • Settings may reset after video refresh or output change, requiring re-selection.
  • Restarting Firefox after configuration is often required for changes to take effect.

Works well on most sites, including Youtube. However, it doesn't work together with "Audio Equalizer" and "Equalizer for YouTube" from Muyor, unfortunately. Would be great if this could be changed, because having to switch the equaliser off when playing music on a second device is a pity.

It works as expected on most tabs. When the source gets updated (like after a while when watching a stream, or reloading the page), it stops working, and while that's fine I found another problem. For twitch I use a special player, because it stutters a lot otherwise, and it opens up as a moz-extension site. It straight up doesn't work in those types of sites.
