404 Bookmarks Firefox

404 Bookmarks

With this extension you can find expired bookmarks and remove them easily. You can find all kinds of broken bookmarks, like pages that return 404 (Page not found) or other HTTP errors.

Features & Capabilities

404 Bookmarks Chrome Extension

The 404 Bookmarks extension helps users manage and clean their bookmarks by detecting expired and broken links. It scans bookmarks to identify those leading to pages returning HTTP 404 errors (Page Not Found) or other HTTP errors such as 403 (Forbidden), 503 (Service Unavailable), or DNS lookup failures.

Users can quickly find and remove expired bookmarks, keeping their bookmark collections up-to-date and clutter-free. The extension warns users to manually verify links before deleting, as deletions cannot be undone. For best functionality, users should temporarily disable ad blockers like uBlock or Adblock Plus if websites are incorrectly shown as broken.

This extension provides an efficient way to maintain bookmark quality, improve browsing experience, and avoid frustration caused by broken links.

User Reviews

Users praise 404 Bookmarks for reliably finding many dead links, simplicity, and ability to handle large bookmark sets for cleanup. Repeated complaints are lack of a visible UI/instructions, no pause/stop or filtering options, minimal output (no URL/path/export), and resource/performance impact during long scans.
Pros
  • Effectively finds and lists dead/404 bookmarks (many users found large numbers of expired links)
  • Works on large bookmark collections (users reported scanning thousands to tens of thousands)
  • Very simple/minimal to use — many called it easy and quick to run
  • Useful for periodic cleanup (including use on TorBrowser)
Cons
  • No clear user interface or instructions — several users couldn't find how to run it or where controls are
  • No processing controls (no pause/stop), and no filters or settings to refine scans
  • Very bare‑bones output — missing features such as showing bookmark URL/path, export (CSV), or additional search options
  • Can consume noticeable resources and slow Firefox during large scans

I have been collecting bookmarks for 5 years, and this is a wonderful extension to have. Over 3000 expired (404) bookmarks.

There is no stop function when searching through bookmarks, and you always have to scroll down to select them. This may be fine with a few hundred bookmarks, but with thousands of bookmarks it's annoying. You have to wait forever for the list to be processed. And Firefox's performance drops dramatically during this time. With a stop button, you could pause the search to sort through the results. But then the select button has to be at the top, because it always moves with the bookmarks found. Terrible!
