YouTube Shot Detect Segmenter Firefox

YouTube Shot Detect Segmenter

By: sumant
Segments YouTube video by shots (approximate, based on timestamped thumbnails)

Features & Capabilities

When YouTube is playing, click on the extension icon. The extension will sample thumbnails of the video from various timestamps, and classify them based on similarity. The classification is as follows:

  • Consecutive similar-looking thumbnails are grouped into one shot.
  • Disjoint similar-looking shorts are clubbed into one camera.

If the classification is not up to the mark, try adjusting the sensitivity sliders provided therein. While doing so, you can "star" a thumbnail, so that shots similar to the thumbnail are prioritized (as camera 1).

For every camera, thumbnails along with the timestamp segments are provided. You can play segments of a particular camera by clicking the play button provided. This however requires that you have another extension, called 'YouTube Parts Looper & Bookmarker" installed (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-parts-looper/).

The shot change detection algorithm purely works on the sampled thumbnails (provided by YouTube), so it is always approximate. Error range is ±2 for small videos (<10 min), and ±4 sec for long videos (>20 min). Works best for low-movement setup (e.g. podcasts, interviews).
