xiMatrix Firefox

xiMatrix

block requests based on domain and type

Features & Capabilities

This extension is heavily inspired by uMatrix, but much simpler. By default, all web requests as well as inline code are blocked. You can then define rules to allow only those requests you want. Definitely for advanced users.

Differences to uMatrix:

  • advantages
    • uMatrix is no longer maintained. The last release was in July 2021.
    • keyboard navigation
    • simpler code
    • rules are encoded as JSON
    • it is possible to control inline scripts, styles, and images
    • there is a separate column for fonts
  • disadvantages / simplifications
    • no settings at all
    • less flexible rules
      • there are no block rules, so it is not possible to overwrite an extensive allow rule with a more specific block rule
      • images and media have been combined into a single column
      • I am sure some of the details of the rule inheritance are different. I tried to produce something that works for me rather than copying every detail.
    • the popup is not updated while it is open. You have to close and open it again to refresh the data.
    • blocked images are not replaced by a placeholder

Honestly, good job. BUT! Whether the developer will see this or not, if you see this, PLEASE implement the counter, so that I would see how much requests xiMatrix have blocked. Additionally, while not required and unrelated, it would be really better if the description of that browser extension on here, would be improved. Like, how much is it better then uMatrix? Why? Is xiMatrix a FORK of uMatrix or ORIGINAL? Does xiMatrix has ALL of the features uMatrix has or what features does it lacks unlike uMatrix?

I like that this extension is lightweight, super fast and easy to use. There is a bug however. This extension brakes installation of addons from addons.mozilla.org. The site says: extension cannot be installed because of connection problems. I didn't see any indicators of blocked requests in Ximatrix though. Had to disable over 30 firefox extensions to find out have to blame Ximatrix. Took me a lot of time. Please investigate this. Thanks for your great work.

Is xiMatrix Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

xiMatrix requires a lot of sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.
