Winger - A Window Manager Firefox

Winger - A Window Manager

Name windows, move tabs between windows, stash windows away, and more. Use multiple windows with ease, making them a truly viable way to organize lots of tabs.

Features & Capabilities

Divide-and-conquer tabs with windows you name by topic, task, or project. Winger provides a keyboard-accessible panel (default F1) with arrow-key navigation and autocompleting slash commands like /help to switch windows, move tabs, or view tips. Right-click on a tab or link for the Send to Window context menu, and most core actions are a click away.

Stash windows to save and restore later—the stashes are bookmarks that sync across devices. Private window support allows moving tabs into private contexts, and minimized windows are grouped last in the panel for easier organization. The stash/unstash feature preserves details like pinned tabs, tab trees, and containers, enabling robust workspace management.

User Reviews

Users praise Winger for its stash/unstash window management, bold keyboard-friendly commands, and the ability to manage many tabs and Windows across tasks with a clean, lightweight interface. The CLI-like approach and quick, memory-focused workflows consistently stand out, with many noting it as a decisive improvement over other window managers. Common caveats include requests for additional UX features (viewing stashed items in-list, alphabetical sorting, keyboard shortcuts for unstash, moving tabs into stashes). A few reports mention instability after restarts, but overall sentiment is highly positive.
Pros
  • Stash/unstash window and tab management as a core, highly valued feature.
  • Keyboard-driven workflow and CLI-like commands for fast navigation.
  • Provides a global overview across many windows and tabs, improving organization.
  • Easy to use and lightweight with thoughtful design.
  • Proves reliable and enhances multi-window/project workflows.
Cons
  • Some users feel it’s just a tab list and not adding value beyond Firefox’s built-in features.
  • Missing convenient UX options: un-stash from the UI, show stashed items in the list, and sorting controls (e.g., alphabetical).
  • Requests for extra keyboard shortcuts and move-tab-to-stash capabilities (power-user requests).
  • Occasional instability after restart / forgets window names reported by a reviewer.

At this point I could barely exist without this extension. It keeps my tabs organized by context and allows me to stash those context when I'm not actively working on them, then pick up where I left off later. Probably the most valuable extension I have right after a password vault and ad-blocker.

Really high quality extension. Would be nice if the pop-up window showing the list of windows allowed you the option to sort alphabetically/numerically by name so to go to a given window you would always go to the same place. Now you have to read the names of the window to make sure you go to correct one.
