WebAPI Manager Firefox

WebAPI Manager

**This project is currently un-maintained. Please email if you're interested in co-maintaining the project.** Improves browser security and privacy by controlling page access to the Web API.

Features & Capabilities

The WebAPI Manager Chrome extension empowers users to improve their browser security and privacy by selectively controlling web pages' access to different browser Web APIs. Users can create custom rule sets for specific domains, limiting websites to only the functionality they require, reducing exposure to seldom-used or privacy-compromising features like Web Audio API, WebGL, or the Ambient Light Sensor API. This granular control helps minimize attack surfaces and tracking vectors such as fingerprinting.

With over 1,400 JavaScript methods categorized into 74 Web API standards, the extension offers domain-specific functionality blocking through regex matching, default fallback rules, and a smart blocking method that minimizes disruption to existing web page code. While currently unmaintained, WebAPI Manager is based on academic research from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s BITSLab and continues to be a valuable tool for privacy-conscious users aiming to secure their browsing experience.
