Drainage and moisture retaining soils are ideal for hair cultivation. Heavy and clay soils with no drainage are not suitable for this crop, as water retention in the soil adversely affects the growth of the crop. Yield is better if soil level (pH) is 6.5 to 8.5.

In Western Maharashtra, this crop can be grown in any season of the year. Planting should be completed by January-February for summer season. One hectare of hair cultivation requires five kg of seeds. Seed treatment of 3 gms of Thyrum per kg of seed should be done before planting. Hair roots have nitrogen storage nodules. The bacteria in these nodules absorb nitrogen from the air. This nitrogen is stored in the soil and then supplied to the plant.
In this way the crop meets its own nitrogen requirement to some extent. So to get a lot of nodules on the roots of this crop, 100 g of Rhizobium bactericide should be applied to the seed at the time of sowing. Dissolve 100 to 120 gms of jaggery in one liter of water and boil for 10 to 15 minutes. Once it cools down, add bactericide, then sprinkle this solution on the hair seeds and gently apply the whole seed by hand. Before sowing, such seeds should be dried in the shade and sown immediately. Before applying Rhizobium bactericide, fur seed should be treated with fungicide.
Cultivation techniques
