URL Checker Firefox

URL Checker

Scan URLs with VirusTotal directly from Firefox. Check individual URLs, organize frequently scanned links into folders, re-scan saved links, and store links from the right-click context menu.

Features & Capabilities

Scan and check URLs with VirusTotal directly from Firefox.

Important: URLs submitted through this extension are sent to VirusTotal and are subject to VirusTotal's policies. Do not submit sensitive or confidential URLs.

  • URL Check: Paste a URL into the single-use URL Check tab and scan it with VirusTotal.
  • Saved folders: Organize frequently scanned URLs into folders so they can be easily found and rescanned.
  • Context menu: Right-click a page or link to quickly add it to a folder. The context menu supports two modes.
  • Scan results: View the most recent scan result for individual and saved URLs and open the corresponding VirusTotal report.
  • Search: Search saved URLs from the extension popup and quickly navigate to the folder containing the matching URL.
  • Notifications: Receive progress and final-result notifications while scans are running, including OS-level notifications when the popup is closed or out of focus.
  • Cached results: URLs with scan reports of less than 12 hours old will be returned quickly without waiting for a new scan.

When a URL needs to be rescanned, the extension checks for an updated result at 20-second intervals, up to 10 times. If the popup is open, progress is displayed through toast notifications. If the popup is closed or out of focus, OS-level notifications are used instead.

Toast notifications remain available when the popup is reopened so you can see that a scan is still in progress.

URLs with a suspicious or malicious result require confirmation before opening the corresponding page.

A VirusTotal API key is required to use the extension. The extension uses your own VirusTotal API key rather than providing a shared key. Your API key can be set in the settings page of the extension.

You can obtain a free VirusTotal API key from VirusTotal.

This extension is an independent, open-source project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by VirusTotal.

When you submit a URL through this extension, the URL is submitted to VirusTotal using your own VirusTotal API key. Your use of VirusTotal's services is subject to VirusTotal's applicable terms and policies.

Please review VirusTotal's:

URLs submitted through this extension are handled by VirusTotal according to its applicable terms and policies.

Do not submit URLs containing personal, confidential, or commercially sensitive information unless you understand and accept the implications of submitting them to VirusTotal.

Is URL Checker Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

URL Checker requires very minimum permissions.

Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

URL Checker is recently added, and hasn't been around long enough for us to gather enough data to accurately assess its risk level.
