Catch It

Catch It can help you better understand your moods through an ongoing diary.

Features & Capabilities

Catch It is a collaborative Chrome extension developed by the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester. It enables users to better understand their moods through maintaining an ongoing diary. Designed around core principles of psychological mental health approaches, particularly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), this tool encourages self-reflection and mood tracking.

While it provides insights into emotional patterns and promotes well-being, it is not a replacement for professional mental health care or therapy. Users experiencing mental health concerns are advised to seek assistance from qualified healthcare professionals.

User Reviews

Users generally find Catch It helpful for mood tracking and CBT-style reflection, with privacy via a PIN. However, multiple reviews cite usability gaps: a limited, non-customizable set of emotions; no option to edit/delete entries; positive-mood prompts can be counterproductive; and it may worsen anxiety for some users or be unsuitable for certain groups. Overall, it’s a simple, privacy-conscious self-reflection tool that needs better emotion options, editing features, and UX handling of positive moods.
Pros
  • Helps with mood and self-reflection, often calming.
  • Supports CBT-like reflection and thought reframing.
  • PIN-based privacy protects diary entries.
  • Allows recording real-time mood and helps untangle obsessive thoughts.
  • Simple, accessible self-monitoring tool.
Cons
  • Emotion options are limited and not customizable.
  • Cannot edit or delete diary entries.
  • Positive-emotion prompts can be confusing or counterproductive.
  • May increase anxiety for some users or not be suitable for everyone (including children).

this app used to be good, and i can now add positive moods, but there's now way to save the moods ive selected in order to get to the next screen…

This app used to be really helpful but the January 2025 update has changed what we are encouraged to reflect upon: instead of getting us to think about automatic thoughts it now shows us what we wrote in the "what was happening just before"-section. So it's just not working anymore.
