TRUST Review Firefox

TRUST Review

Systematically evaluate academic search and AI tools against the TRUST Framework. Capture screenshots, score rubric items 0-3, and export a review package — all locally in a browser side panel. No accounts.

Features & Capabilities

TRUST Review helps researchers and educators conduct structured evaluations of information tools — search engines, academic databases, and AI assistants — using the TRUST Framework developed at the University of Twente.

Everything happens inside a browser sidebar:

  • Capture evidence — screenshot the active tab at native resolution and archive the page HTML.
  • Annotate — draw arrows, boxes, labels, and freehand strokes over captures with a built-in canvas editor.
  • Score — evaluate each rubric principle on a 0–3 scale (with N/A and "unsure"), attaching the captured evidence directly to each item.
  • Export — finish with a self-contained review package: CSVs of scores/metadata plus a standalone HTML report (fully inlined, viewable anywhere).
Multi-session support keeps every review independent, with debounced auto-save to local storage. Switch between reviews, resume incomplete ones, or start fresh.

Privacy. The extension is fully local. There is no backend, no account system, and no analytics or telemetry — all sessions, screenshots, and exports live in the browser's IndexedDB and never leave the machine. The only outbound connection is to a vendor CDN (cdn.tldraw.com) that serves UI translations for the annotation canvas; no user data is sent there.

Built with WXT and React. Source code is public under the Apache-2.0 license at https://github.com/utsmok/review-extension.

Is TRUST Review Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

TRUST Review requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.

Risk impact analysis details
  • Critical Allows access to all websites, posing a significant security risk as it can monitor and modify data from any visited site.
Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

TRUST Review is recently added, and hasn't been around long enough for us to gather enough data to accurately assess its risk level.
