Text to Speech (TTS)

By: Morni
Text to Speech is a text to speech engine with natural sounding voices.

Features & Capabilities

Text to Speech (TTS) is a lightweight browser extension that converts selected or entered text into natural-sounding speech using two engines: the native HTML5 Web Speech API for instant browser synthesis, and the Kokoro AI engine for higher-quality, AI-driven voices. Kokoro requires a one-time download (~300MB) but can run fully offline afterward and supports saving audio output as a WAV file.

Use the standalone interface via the toolbar to paste text, or trigger in-page playback by selecting text and clicking the speaker icon (highlighting is beta and works best when selecting paragraph-by-paragraph). Adjustable in-page options are available in the extension settings. For bugs or feedback, visit the add-on homepage to submit a report.

User Reviews

Most reviews are negative about this Firefox TTS extension. A few users praise that it can read text aloud, and one notes a highlighting feature. However, the majority report significant drawbacks: the voices sound robotic and not natural, the UI requires a separate window which disrupts browsing, and audio can fail to play or not be installed at all. Some mention limited content support (e.g., PDFs) and the need to tweak about:config settings. Overall, it trails behind smoother, more natural TTS experiences like Edge’s.
Pros
  • Reads text aloud (text-to-speech output is functional)
Cons
  • Voices are robotic/not natural and of low perceived quality
  • User experience is poor due to the extension opening a separate window instead of reading inline
  • In some cases the extension produces no sound or fails to install voices (unreliable audio)

There is no option in the context menu to select text on the page and read directly. Also, the voice is too robotic, take an example from MS Edge and their reader and TTS And one more thing, TTS does not support my language :((

Stop bullshitting people with your robot voices from Microsoft in your TTS extension. This extension is simply the last shit because these Microsoft robot voices are unbearable.
