User Reviews

Users praise Talkie’s quick startup and that it works on many systems (including macOS Sonoma) and admire the project. Major complaints repeatedly mentioned are bad robotic voice quality, reliability issues (stops early or won’t read selections), limited/custom voices locked behind a paid tier, and awkward controls or speed problems.
Pros
  • Fast startup — begins reading quicker than some alternatives
  • Works on many systems (several users report it runs on macOS Sonoma)
  • Well‑conceived project; some users praised the developer and overall design
Cons
  • Poor, robotic or unintelligible synthesized voices
  • Unreliable behaviour — fails to start, stops after a few seconds, or doesn’t read highlighted text
  • Limited voice selection / important voices/features appear behind a "premium" paywall
  • Unintuitive controls (need to hold button or use right‑click) and occasional speed control problems

I'm using this on Debian Linux and this works well with the default speech-dispatcher. I installed as a Dutch speaking person, among other things: "mbrola mbrola-nl1 mbrola-nl2 mbrola-nl3 espeak-ng speech-dispatcher-espeak-ng", voices that are good enough for me, and so even with the non-premium version I can switch voices by creating a custom config file for the speech-dispatcher. I'd like to change the voice through the plugin and I like this plugin, so I donated €5,- but can't seem to upgrade. Contacted the developer for this. Long story short: Put some time and effort into getting this working and working with the voice you like. Don't listen to the one stars: If it doesn't work, high chance you didn't put enough effort into it. Don't expect high quality AI-like voices from a free plugin. You need to wise-up, learn, try and repeat to get things working. I now know how text to speech works, you can too. Next time this will take me 5 minutes to set up.
