Python Notebook Viewer is praised for allowing offline rendering of .ipynb files in Firefox, providing convenience without a dedicated app or server. Many users find it useful and well-done for typical notebooks. However, the extension has not been updated since 2019, leading to bugs such as text visibility problems (especially with dark mode), incomplete rendering of certain elements, and inconsistent behavior on recent Firefox versions or OS platforms. Despite some quirks like slow load or needing page refresh, it remains a valuable tool for quickly viewing notebooks locally.

Avantages

Enables offline viewing and rendering of .ipynb files directly in Firefox without needing Jupyter Notebook server.
Works fairly well for most notebooks, with good support for math rendering via KaTeX.
Simple and convenient tool that saves time opening Python Notebook files without dedicated applications.
Generally appreciated for the ease it brings to viewing notebooks and as a helpful utility overall.

Inconvénients

The extension appears abandoned with last update in 2019, leading to bugs and outdated support.
Text rendering issues occur, especially with dark mode themes causing white text on light backgrounds that is hard to read.

Slow loading times for some files and occasional requirement to refresh the page for proper rendering.

To do this, it builds on existing open-source components like an iPython notebook parser (notebook.js, https://github.com/jsvine/notebookjs) and math rendering engine (katex.js, https://github.com/KaTeX/KaTeX). There are sometimes rendering differences for unusual notebooks but in general this works very well.
