Python Notebook Viewer is praised for allowing offline rendering of .ipynb files in Firefox, providing convenience without a dedicated app or server. However, the extension has not been updated since 2019, leading to bugs such as text visibility problems (especially with dark mode), incomplete rendering of certain elements, and inconsistent behavior on recent Firefox versions or OS platforms. Despite some quirks like slow load or needing page refresh, it remains a valuable tool for quickly viewing notebooks locally.

To do this, it builds on existing open-source components like an iPython notebook parser (notebook.js, https://github.com/jsvine/notebookjs) and math rendering engine (katex.js, https://github.com/KaTeX/KaTeX).
