Night Viewer - Dark mode for view page source

Night Viewer enables dark mode for the View Page Sources, structures and formats the code to make it more readable

Night Viewer is a lightweight and free Chrome extension designed to enhance your experience when viewing page sources. It enables a dark mode for the View Page Source window, making it easier on the eyes during extended coding sessions or at night. The extension not only formats and beautifies the source code for improved readability but also allows you to adjust the font size to your preference.

Beyond just beautifying static HTML, Night Viewer displays both the original source code returned from the server and the rendered DOM afterJavaScript execution, helping developers understand dynamic content changes. Developed by the creators of the popular Night Eye dark mode extension, Night Viewer emphasizes privacy by being serverless and storing only minimal local data like font preferences. It's a handy tool for developers seeking a better, more customizable source code viewing experience directly in Chrome.

User reviews

The Night Viewer Chrome extension provides a helpful dark mode for viewing page source code, reducing eye strain and offering customization like font size. Users appreciate its simplicity and lightweight nature. However, it has significant issues, most notably hijacking the letter 'U' keystroke during typing, causing unintended pop-ups and making web usage frustrating. Additionally, it does not modify native 'view-source:' pages but shows its own modal, which may disappoint some users. Some wish it could be bundled within broader dark mode extensions to streamline usage.
Pros
  • Provides a dark mode for viewing page source, which reduces eye strain from the white background.
  • Simple and easy to use with useful features like font size modification.
  • Free, lightweight, and very useful for users needing a custom dark mode for source code pages.
  • Offers a darkened, syntax-colored source view in a modal window, enhancing readability.
  • Some users find it so helpful they can't live without it.
Cons
  • Randomly hijacks the letter 'U' keystroke when typing, causing the source viewer to pop up unintentionally, making web browsing unusable.
  • Does not affect the native 'view-source:' pages as some users expect; instead, it intercepts Ctrl+U and shows its own modal source view, which some find limiting.
  • Incompatibility or lack of functionality on some OS versions like macOS Catalina.
  • Some users expressed a desire for this extension to be bundled with similar ones (e.g., Night Eye) to reduce extension clutter.

Pretty, but radomly hijacks the letter U when I'm typing, so it is now popping up the view source modal nearly every time I type a message. This is just too annoying, so sadly I had to uninstall it. This for sure happened consistently in Gmail as well as Twitch chat, but really it wasn't website specific and happens all over the web. I use Linux and MacOS and the same behavior happened on both. Weirdly, when this happens, the only way to get my U key back to where I can actually type the letter U without triggering the popup is to hit the Ctrl key (Linux) or Cmd key (Mac) by itself. This then lets me type the letter U for awhile before it happens again. Hope this helps.

Doesn't work at all.

Super useful for me as my eyes were hurting from that white background. I don't care if it "steals" Ctrl+u to display that pop-up as others have mentioned. In fact, it's much better than I can just press ESC and go back to where I was instead of needing to close a tab. I just started using it, but first impression deserves a good review :) --- Oh no, the rating went to 1 because basically the extension doesn't let you type "u" in a text box!!!
