PawBlock

Block websites to prevent procrastination and excessive web surfing.

PawBlock is a Chrome extension designed to help users stop procrastinating by blocking access to distracting websites. Users can specify a personalized list of websites or even specific web paths they want to block. When you attempt to visit a blocked page, PawBlock displays an image of a sad animal, encouraging you to stay focused. You can switch to a happy animal by hovering over a button to return.

The extension offers flexible blocking modes: a strict "hard block" that outright prevents access, or a "soft block" that includes a bypass button, which can be delayed with a configurable countdown to encourage intentional decisions. PawBlock respects your privacy by not tracking or sending browsing history anywhere. Additional features include toggling the extension on/off from the toolbar and exporting/importing your block list for convenience. Available resources include a homepage, GitHub repository, and a FAQ section for support and user feedback.

A simple block list that you can add pages to, then turn on and off. A little friction, but not crazy friction. That's all I need. There are other addons, with a TON of options and full lockdown mode, but this is a simple On and Off addon. And I love the use animal pictures here. Now I just have to add addons.mozilla.org to the blocklist as well!

Extension safety

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

PawBlock requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.

This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

PawBlock has earned a fairly good reputation and likely can be trusted.
