User reviews

Lichess beta is praised for being a completely free, ad-free chess app with a clean and improved user interface and strong learning tools including puzzles and analysis. Users appreciate that it closely replicates the website's functionality with fast servers. However, common complaints include missing features like offline play, tournaments, and some study tools. Navigation and gameplay bugs hinder smooth experience, such as difficulty accessing active games and issues with piece movement. Users also desire more customization and social features. Overall, the app is well-liked but still maturing with room for improvement.
Pros
  • Completely free with no ads, providing full features including analysis, puzzles, and study.
  • Clean, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing user interface with improved layout compared to the previous app version.
  • Good functionality replicating website features, offering fast server and quick pairing.
  • Effective tools for chess learning and improving skills, including insightful move analysis and various puzzle modes.
  • Active development with openness to feedback and continuous addition of new features.
Cons
  • Lack of offline play mode with computer opponents; users request an offline feature.
  • Missing key features present in the main or original app, such as tournament participation, 'learn from your mistakes', interactive studies, and request computer analysis.
  • Navigation issues: inability to easily access active games without notifications; difficulty in returning to daily games; some menus or features like chat and language settings have problems.
  • Input and gameplay bugs: issues with piece movement lag or unintended moves when dragging, difficulty playing quickly under time pressure, and inability to send match invitations or join games with friends seamlessly.
  • Limited customization options such as fewer board and piece designs (especially 3D), lack of profile picture option, and missing game history details like opening names.

Excellent app! Entirely free with everything you need (analysis, puzzle, study...) Only thing is first game the pieces were lagging. Just turn off piece animation :)

It's really fun to play, but there are so many lost games because of pieces moving halfway to an intended position by dragging. I need to develop a whole different way of making a move by two taps. That's rather annoying.
