Open Tabs Next to Current

Open new tabs always to the right of the current one.

Open Tabs Next To Current

This Chrome extension ensures new tabs open directly to the right of your current tab, improving tab management and workflow efficiency. Unlike the default behavior where tabs open at the end of the tab bar, this extension positions new tabs next to the active one, reducing tab clutter and helping users keep related tabs grouped.

Note: Some limitations exist due to webextension API constraints, such as visible tab movements and behavior when opening multiple tabs simultaneously. For Firefox users, adjusting the browser.tabs.tabMinWidth setting can improve usability by preventing unwanted tab scrolling. The extension is no longer necessary for browsers supporting the native browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrent setting. Users are encouraged to report bugs or contribute on the project's GitHub repository.

Experience a more organized and intuitive tabbed browsing experience with Open Tabs Next to Current.

User reviews

Users appreciate that "Open Tabs Next to Current" effectively places new tabs directly next to the active tab, offering better control over tab order than Firefox's default. It supports opening multiple tabs in a logical sequence and continues working well in recent Firefox versions. However, multiple reviews mention that the add-on does not fully prevent Firefox from jumping the view to the far right of the tab bar, especially when opening tabs from bookmarks. There are also some reports of stability issues on Linux Wayland and minor inconsistencies within tab groups. Overall, it improves tab management but has room for refinement.
Pros
  • Opens new tabs immediately next to the current tab, improving tab order management.
  • Works better than the default Firefox behavior and some native settings like browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrent.
  • Remains functional and beneficial in newer Firefox versions (e.g., Firefox 116).
  • Allows opening multiple tabs next to the current tab in a more logical, recent-to-last order.
Cons
  • Sometimes causes Firefox to jump or scroll the tab bar to the rightmost tab when opening from bookmarks, which disrupts workflow.
  • Does not fully override Firefox's default behavior of jumping to the last tab when new tabs are opened, causing disorientation with many tabs.
  • Has some compatibility issues or stability problems, especially when running Firefox on Wayland in Linux, with potential crashes.
  • Does not always open tabs exactly next to the current one inside tab groups, opening tabs slightly further to the right instead.

Inside tab groups, the new tab doesn't open right next to the current tab but two tabs to the right.
