Page Monitor

Stays in the background and monitors web pages for changes.

About Page Monitor

Page Monitor is a Chrome extension designed to quietly run in the background while continuously monitoring web pages for any changes. Originally released in 2015, it has provided reliable page change detection across many Chrome updates.

Update Notice

Due to Google's discontinuation of WebSQL support, the Page Monitor extension can no longer be maintained in its current form. Users are encouraged to migrate to the Visualping.io Chrome extension which offers comparable functionality for free. Detailed migration instructions are provided to ensure a smooth transition.

The upcoming Visualping extension update promises modern technology to enhance page monitoring capabilities directly within your browser. This extension remains a useful tool for anyone needing real-time notifications about changes on web pages of interest.

User reviews

Page Monitor was a highly valued Chrome extension known for its simple interface, accurate monitoring, and low resource consumption. However, reliance on deprecated WebSQL caused it to stop functioning after Chrome updates, leading to data loss and user frustration. Users also criticized a lack of timely developer support and communication. Many are unhappy with suggested alternatives like VisualPing due to usability and cost concerns. Overall, users view Page Monitor as the best tool for their needs, but recent technical and support problems have effectively ended its usability.
Pros
  • Simple and clear user interface loved by long-term users.
  • Accurate monitoring with ability to use CSS-style selectors to focus checks on specific page areas.
  • Light CPU usage during checks compared to alternatives like VisualPing.
  • Preferred by many over alternatives due to better customization and simplicity.
  • Worked reliably for years before recent compatibility issues.
Cons
  • The extension heavily relies on deprecated WebSQL, causing it to stop working with recent Chrome updates.
  • Data loss issues reported due to database corruption or incompatibility, leading to loss of monitored sites.
  • Lack of adequate developer support or communication regarding issues and non-English user concerns.
  • No ability to export or sync monitored sites, complicating migration to other tools.
  • Replacement alternatives like VisualPing are seen as inferior due to poor usability, limited free checks, and lack of customization.
