Summary
The escape key will act as a shortcut to closing the tab you currently have open. Simply press it and the tab will be closed.
=Notes= It cannot close any windows that Chrome won't allow you to close in this manner. Examples: any Chrome system page (History, Downloads, etc.) and some Google sites (Chrome Web Store).
