Tab Slider

Tab Slider

Keep your tabs ordered by their most recent usage.

What is Tab Slider?
Tab Slider is a Chrome extension that keeps browser tabs sorted in a most recently used order (MRU), just like a list of apps is organized on desktop operating systems. It slides the tabs to the leftmost position if stayed on for more than 1 second. Pinned tabs slide from left to right. Customize reordering delay and maximum number of tabs. New active tabs appear on the left immediately.

Summary

This extension keeps browser's tabs sorted in most recently used order (MRU), from left to right, just like a list of apps is organized on desktop operation systems (while holding Alt+Tab). Tab Slider brings this behavior to Chrome browser for your convenience. Try it!

How it works:

  • If you stay on tab more than 1 second (default), it will "slide" to the leftmost position;
  • In this way, most recently used tabs always stay left-to-right ordered;
  • Because of the order, naturally, when switching tabs with Ctrl+Tab, the browser will switch to the next most recently used tab;
  • Pinned tabs will slide to the opposite side, from left to right. This behavior is intended, enabling you to conveniently switch between most recently used pinned tabs and most recently used normal tabs with keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Shift+Tab switches to most recently used pinned tab, and Ctrl+Tab switches back to most recently used normal tab).
  • You can customize reordering delay or maximum number of tabs in the extension's settings;
  • New active tabs appear left immediately.

Once you understand this concept, you will find such reordering of tabs absolutely natural and logical.

One of THE BEST, if not THE BEST extension ever. Raised a feature request on the Vivaldi forum for this very feature a couple days ago; nobody responded; was looking for an Alt-Tab style tab switcher for the browse instead, and found THIS! At first was hesitant, since there always are a bunch of tabs opened on the leftmost side of my windows which I won't want repositioned, and then saw that one could exclude pinned tabs from the rearranging behaviour! This extension is JUST PERFECT! If only there was a similar app for Windows, to sort the windows 10/11 taskbar icons too; sure, the Alt-Tab and Win-Tab task switchers are great, but they're not always passively/silently visible like the taskbar icons are, and are a click or a shortcut away too... Nevermind. Anyway, keep up the good work, buddy; I was so sad the past few days that this feature wasn't there, and you just made me so so so happy!!! Love you.
