New Tab Same Group Firefox

New Tab Same Group

Opens new tabs in the same group as the active one — right after, at the beginning, or at the end. Supports Firefox’s native tab groups, vertical (sidebar) or horizontal (classic) modes.

Features & Capabilities

New Tab Same Group automatically inserts new tabs into the same native Firefox tab group as your active tab. Choose whether new tabs open directly after the active tab (default), at the beginning of the group, or at the end — keeping related tabs together and preserving your workflow across both vertical (sidebar) and classic horizontal tab layouts.

Requires Firefox 138+ with the browser’s native tab grouping enabled. The extension is lightweight, privacy-first (zero tracking, no external dependencies), and released under the MIT license. Quick setup instructions are included if tab grouping isn’t visible, and the add-on is available on addons.mozilla.org.

User Reviews

Users praise New Tab Same Group for providing a missing, simple enhancement that speeds up tab management by keeping new tabs in the active group and aligning with Firefox's tab-group concept. It is described as lightweight, straightforward, and exactly as advertised, delivering a welcome quality-of-life improvement. However, several reliability issues recur: bugs where clicking or opening groups behaves erratically (creating new tabs, group merging and disappearance); problems reopening saved tab groups; and inconsistent or non-functional keyboard shortcuts (including Alt+Shift+T and ungrouped-tab shortcuts) and unwanted behavior when using the New Tab button. Overall valued with actionable bug reports and feature requests.
Pros
  • Fills a missing tab-group workflow and speeds up work by keeping new tabs in the current group.
  • Lightweight, simple, and straightforward; it just works.
  • Adds an essential feature to Firefox's native tab group system.
  • Does exactly what it promises and improves daily workflow.
Cons
  • Bugs causing erratic group behavior (e.g., collapsing a group creates new tabs).
  • Opening a closed group can merge and disappear.
  • Hotkeys/shortcuts don't reliably work (e.g., Alt+Shift+T, ungrouped-tab shortcut).
  • Reopening saved tab groups can place tabs in the active group instead of their original group.
  • New Tab button can open in the wrong group, not respecting the current context.

great add-on, my only gripe is that when i reopen closed groups they automatically merge into the group i have open. easy enough to avoid / resolve if it happens but can be annoying sometimes.
