User Reviews

Users largely praise Subsonic Music Streamer as the best Subsonic Android client with a clean UI and reliable streaming, especially for Nextcloud users. However, long-term maintenance gaps manifest as compatibility issues on new Android versions, crashes, and slowdowns. Bluetooth controls and gapless playback are notable pain points, along with server reliability and unclear licensing/support. Overall sentiment is positive when it works, but concerns about ongoing maintenance and future updates temper enthusiasm.
Pros
  • Clean, simple UI with good sound quality; widely praised as the best Subsonic client on Android.
  • Easy to use and remains a popular, reliable option for streaming from Subsonic/Nextcloud.
  • Good compatibility with Subsonic servers and useful features like remote control (Jukebox).
  • Long-standing user base and strong sentiment that it fills the niche after Audiogalaxy shutdown.
Cons
  • Not updated or maintained in years, leading to compatibility issues on newer Android versions and occasional crashes.
  • External Bluetooth controls stopped working after Android 12 (pause/play and NextTrack issues).
  • Lack of gapless playback, causing silence between tracks and overall less seamless listening.
  • Server reliability concerns (servers go down, limited real-time health status), impacting uptime.
  • Perceived licensing/permission issues and sense that the project is abandoned, with uncertain future support.

Bundled with my asustor, compared to Plex this is much better. The app has clearly been abandoned and appears that Asustor removed subsonic from their adm bundled software package for security reasons; which is utter stupidity! Apps are for the user's enjoyment not to share with every Tom Dick and Harry on the net. Another reason asustor is not the Nas that's going anywhere in 2026.

I was a long time AudioGalaxy user. When their new owners killed their app on Jan 31, 2013, l found Subsonic. I am SO happy.
