User reviews

Users appreciate Virtru for its ease of use and effective email encryption that integrates well with Gmail without altering normal email workflows. However, many face recurring issues such as the extension disabling itself requiring frequent reinstalls, compatibility problems with Gmail's new interface, automatic encryption toggling issues, and interference from other extensions. Despite these challenges, customer support has been responsive in providing solutions. Overall, while the tool is valuable, reliability and compatibility improvements are needed.

  • Effective encryption tool for sending sensitive information.
  • Helpful for recipients even if they don't have the extension installed (though with some limitations).
  • Supportive customer service with helpful troubleshooting advice.
Cons
  • Extension often disables itself or 'falls out' requiring frequent reinstallations or reactivations.
  • Compatibility issues with the new Gmail interface causing Gmail to become unresponsive.
  • Difficulty in turning off automatic encryption, leading to user frustration.
  • Causes some emails to be marked as spam by Google's email servers.
  • Conflicts with other Chrome extensions such as Dark Reader, causing malfunctions.

I want to give this extension a higher grade but it tries to encrypt all of my emails even though i turn it off which makes it frustrating. Hopefully yhis can be resolved soon so I can give it the 5 stars it deserves otherwise I will have to try another extension that can do this more effectively.

When I first download the Chrome extension, it works great, but after a day when I reopen my Gmail, Virtru is not active even though it shows up in my Chrome extensions list. Each time I want to use it, I have to uninstall and reinstall the extension. This is very frustrating.

Appears to work, I sent a "Secured" email to someone who didn't have the extension installed in their browser. Responding to my secured email didn't appear to be too onerous of a process for my recipient. My only question is: who controls the encryption keys? Is this an asynchronous encryption process using on-the-fly public/private encryption key generation? I guess that I need to go to the Virtru website and learn how this works.

Extension safety

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Virtru Email Protection requires some sensitive permissions that could impact your browser and data security. Exercise caution before installing.

This is determined by the publisher and the Chrome extension reputation on Chrome Web Store, the amount of time the Chrome extension has been around, and other signals about the Chrome extension. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Chrome extension.

Virtru Email Protection has earned a good reputation and can be trusted.
