Features & Capabilities

The US Military Rank & Reference Chrome extension is an official mobile app developed by the US Navy PMW 240 Program and NETC. It offers an engaging and interactive way to learn and identify Military ranks and insignia across all branches — Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force. Users can participate in quick score-based games that randomly generate rank insignia and collar devices, awarding points for correct answers with a timing element for bonus scoring.

Beyond gaming, the extension provides a sortable reference area for comprehensive review of rank indicators for Enlisted, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Officers. Designed as part of the e-Sailor initiative to enhance training and curriculum delivery, this tool is ideal for both beginners and experienced personnel seeking refresher training on Military ranks and their visual identification.

User Reviews

Users find this Android app generally helpful, easy to use, and informative for learning US military ranks across several branches. It includes quizzes and detailed insignia information, making it useful for study and reference. However, many criticize it for missing key branches like the Coast Guard, outdated content, poor organization starting solely with Navy ranks, and quiz design flaws that undermine learning effectiveness.
Pros
  • Easy to use and navigate with quick access to information like collar, sleeve, shoulder, and cover insignia.
  • Includes ranks for multiple branches, including Marines, Navy, and others.
  • Helpful for learning and studying military ranks, aiding future military members and enthusiasts.
  • Contains quizzes that users find engaging and useful for learning.
  • Provides up-to-date information in some sections, like the US Navy Warrant Officer rank revival.
Cons
  • Lacks information and ranks for the US Coast Guard and other branches like USPHS and NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps.
  • Information is sometimes outdated and missing newer branches like the US Space Force.
  • The app's organization is confusing, starting only with Navy ranks before allowing progress to others.
  • Multiple-choice quizzes are flawed because they mix enlisted and officer insignia and branches, making guessing easier by elimination.
  • Some users describe the scoring as arbitrary and the app lacking proper study materials or real association with the ranks.

Title very misleadingly unless you read the whole description, it's a game, I wanted a reference to the ranks and patches and it's not as far as I can see. I need an encyclopedia of patches.
