Features & Capabilities

Habitica: Gamified Taskmanager is a free, open-source productivity app that turns tasks into a retro RPG quest. Create an avatar, add tasks, chores, or goals, and earn gold, experience, and gear when you complete real-life actions. It supports automatically repeating routines, flexible habit tracking, a traditional to-do list, color-coded progress, and a leveling system, with a large catalog of gear and pets.

It’s community-driven with regular content updates, seasonal events, and collaboration features like Parties, Guilds, and Challenges for accountability. Reminders, widgets, themes, and cross-device syncing help you stay on track. Privacy matters, your tasks are private, and the project welcomes contributors; optional in-app purchases and subscriptions help sustain the open-source project.

User Reviews

Habitica is loved for turning tasks into a gamified RPG with appealing visuals, rewards, and a structure of Habits, Dailies, and To-Dos that helps users stay organized and motivated—particularly for ADHD. Users praise social accountability, pet/quest progression, and long-term life improvement. However, many reports focus on recurring issues: frequent bugs and crashes after updates, unreliable syncing and lack of a solid offline mode, monetization concerns with gems and paywalls, the removal of guilds weakening the social core, and missing Apple Watch support and notification quirks that hamper usability. Overall, strong concept, but stability and social features need attention.
Pros
  • Visually appealing gamified UI with RPG progression
  • Strong task-structure with Habits, Dailies, To-Dos that aids organization
  • Social accountability through friends/party features and community interactions
  • Flexible task types and gamified rewards (pets, quests) that encourage consistency
  • Free core features with optional premium content and productive integrations like a Pomodoro timer
Cons
  • Frequent bugs and crashes, especially after updates
  • Unreliable syncing and lack of robust offline mode
  • Gating of premium content via gems/subscription and pay-to-win concerns
  • Removal or weakening of social features (guilds) reduces community motivation
  • Lack of Apple Watch support and notification/UX issues

So far my experience has been mixed. Habitica doesn’t work as seamlessly as other to do solutions like Todoist, with the biggest annoyance being broken cross platform reminder between PC, Android, and iOS. I’m using Habitica for a very narrow purpose because I like the RPG mechanics. But I would not recommend this as anyone’s standalone approaching Light task management system. This bug has reportedly been open for years and has never been fixed.

Being a gamer at heart, love this. Easy to create goals and habits to track. Wish you could just have a report daily showing how many habits/tasks you got done that day with the EXP earned that day. I want this to ensure each day was productive. So I want to see maybe in a widget: points, tasks, and XP earned for the day

This is hands-down the best goal app I’ve ever used. All the game stuff aside, the goal functions are entirely customizable and easy to use. Organization is clean. The hardest time of this last year was when I stopped using it for a few months, and I’ve recently started using it again religiously; I’m never going back. The game aspect is fun. It’s pretty sweet hitting goals and then seeing my dude in full moon-armor riding a purple dragon with a banner and a sword. Really though it’s just an incredibly solid goal app with a couple fun twists. My ONLY critique; I wish the quests weren’t so hard to do solo. I’m not exactly super social, and I’d love to fight monsters by myself. I’ve been on the same lunar quest for a few months now. Get this app and DIVE into it. My life would be nowhere near as organized without it, and you can tell someone put their heart and soul into designing it.
