Overview

Features & Capabilities

Habitica: Gamified Taskmanager is a free, open-source productivity app that turns tasks into a retro RPG quest. Create an avatar, add tasks, chores, or goals, and earn gold, experience, and gear when you complete real-life actions. It supports automatically repeating routines, flexible habit tracking, a traditional to-do list, color-coded progress, and a leveling system, with a large catalog of gear and pets.

It’s community-driven with regular content updates, seasonal events, and collaboration features like Parties, Guilds, and Challenges for accountability. Reminders, widgets, themes, and cross-device syncing help you stay on track. Privacy matters, your tasks are private, and the project welcomes contributors; optional in-app purchases and subscriptions help sustain the open-source project.

User Reviews

Habitica is loved for turning tasks into a gamified RPG with appealing visuals, rewards, and a structure of Habits, Dailies, and To-Dos that helps users stay organized and motivated—particularly for ADHD. Users praise social accountability, pet/quest progression, and long-term life improvement. However, many reports focus on recurring issues: frequent bugs and crashes after updates, unreliable syncing and lack of a solid offline mode, monetization concerns with gems and paywalls, the removal of guilds weakening the social core, and missing Apple Watch support and notification quirks that hamper usability. Overall, strong concept, but stability and social features need attention.
Pros
  • Visually appealing gamified UI with RPG progression
  • Strong task-structure with Habits, Dailies, To-Dos that aids organization
  • Social accountability through friends/party features and community interactions
  • Flexible task types and gamified rewards (pets, quests) that encourage consistency
  • Free core features with optional premium content and productive integrations like a Pomodoro timer
Cons
  • Frequent bugs and crashes, especially after updates
  • Unreliable syncing and lack of robust offline mode
  • Gating of premium content via gems/subscription and pay-to-win concerns
  • Removal or weakening of social features (guilds) reduces community motivation
  • Lack of Apple Watch support and notification/UX issues

I’ve been using this app on-and-off for years. It got me through dissertation, my licensure exams, and some other non-preferred tasks. It also helps me with motivation and reminders for daily life activities (like remembering chores or self-care habits) and one-off tasks (like remembering to send an email or replace that light bulb that I always seem to forget). The best part is that it doesn’t hide functionality behind a paywall: although you can subscribe for some aesthetic options, it basically retains all its functionality without having to pay. 10/10, 5 stars, two thumbs up, highly recommend, etc…

This app gamifies life and brings novelty to otherwise boring day-to-day tasks, which is great for my ADHD brain. I’ve gotten some friends to join me, and we’ve all been having fun working through all quests lines together. I’ve been using the app for less than 100 days so far, and my party has already reached the final boss. I just hope the app continues to add more content and harder bosses down the line, cause this app has been a life changer for me and I hope to continue playing as long as this app is live.
